Evaluation and Assessment

Competency 3e: Evaluation and Assessment

Introduction

The Andrews University Leadership Department advances a set of leadership competencies, which require students to have “theoretical knowledge and practical application” within a set of “core [leadership] competencies” of which the “leadership through organizations” is one group of competencies (Leadership Handbook, 2011, p. 36).

The third group of leadership competencies addresses “the organizational aspects of leadership. Leadership sets direction in ways that facilitate achievement of organizational goals” (Leadership Handbook, 2011, p. 36).

Regarding the competency of evaluation and assessment, “Leadership uses appropriate evaluation and assessment tools to make decisions about programs and plans” (Leadership Handbook, 2011, p. 37).

I lack a conceptual and theoretical knowledge base regarding this competency of evaluation and assessment. I desire to grow and continue to develop as a leader who is capable of assessing and evaluating the work of The Matzevah Foundation (TMF). I have experience, but I lack knowledge regarding theoretical approaches for evaluating and assessing programs and policies of TMF. Likewise, I do not have an understanding of the parameters used to evaluate organizational effectiveness. My objective, therefore in this competency, is to improve my understanding and practice of the evaluative processes in the development of the organizational programs and policies of TMF.

Assessment. The common definition of assessment is the “evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of someone or something.” Assessment is tantamount to evaluation.

Evaluation. A dictionary definition of evaluation is ‘the making of a judgment about the amount, number, or value of something; assessment.” As noted by Fitzpatrick, Sanders, and Worthen (2011), “among professional evaluators, there is no uniformly agreed-upon definition of precisely what the term ‘evaluation’ means” (p. 6).
