Photojournalism
NEWSPAPERS
Covering Daily Life in TexasI grew up reading Life Magazine and, as such, I became interested in photography. I bought my first camera, a Canon AT-1 in 1976 and in the early 80's, I took a few photography courses and started processing my own film and making prints in my apartment's bathroom.
I began my career as a photojournalist in early 1984, working for a small, daily East Texas newspaper in Palestine, Texas. I had been exploring the craft of photography since 1981 and knew that I wanted to be a photojournalist, but breaking into the field was not easy. The Palestine Herald-Press hired me and gave me a chance to develop as a photojournalist. I really learned my craft and developed my skill as a photojournalist in Palestine. I worked there for five years before moving on to Waco, Texas, where I worked five years for the Waco Tribune-Herald. Here are a few samples of photographs that I made while covering news, sports, and features in Texas between 1984 and 1993. Originally, these photographs were printed on photographic paper. I copied the photographs digitally several years ago. |

Freelance
NEWS AND FEATURES
I traveled to Poland in 1988 with a group of Baptists and later returned several times in the early 90's. I wrote and photographed several stories. I moved to Poland with my family in 1997 in order to work with Polish Baptists. While living and working in Poland, I volunteered in 1999 to work with Baptist relief efforts Albania and later in Kosovo. Below are two groups of photographs that I made from that era (digital copies of photographic prints).
